Environmental Sucess for DST Output

7 May 2009

Despite the economic downturn, communications specialist DST Output has remained dedicated to its environmental programme which has resulted in significant waste reductions and costs savings in excess of £20,000 in the last 12 months. This is in addition to savings of £125,000 made since 2007 through paper waste management.

DST Output has increased recycled rates to almost 95 percent, improved energy efficiency by nine percent and reduced landfills uplifts by 54 percent. It has also invested in a building management system which will further reduce energy usage across the business, recouping costs in just two years.

The company has measured its environmental impact since 2005 and has seen continuous year-on-year improvements, appointing Lucy Klinkenberg as environmental manager in 2007: “With businesses responsible for 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions, we are all accountable for our impact on the environment.”

The TransPromo pioneers have implemented a variety of environmental practices throughout the business, such as regular power audits, waste segregation and ‘Ecobuttons’ for computers.

In addition, DST Output has undertaken an employee engagement scheme to provide staff with the relevant skills and knowledge needed to implement the environmental programme with training, advice and events planned throughout the year.

Lucy continues:

“Many people believe that being environmentally responsible is costly and time consuming whereas an improved environmental programme can actually benefit your bottom line. Our environmental commitment is continuous.”

During the next couple of years, the team will be developing further projects to reduce waste and power usage in addition to increasing company recycling - including a production paper waste project, a CO2 reduction programme and a greener transport proposal.
